For Your Mind, Body, and Spirit
Yoga benefits your mind, your body, and your spirit. It is the perfect all around exercise. It is one of the oldest forms of exercise, going back more than 5,000 years. If something lasts this long there must be a good reason for it.
Yoga focuses on the mind body connection. When your mind is stressed and tense, then so is your body. When your body is relaxed and balanced it has a similar effect on your mind.
The benefit of yoga has positive results on the mat, but it also can have a positive effect on your life long after you have put your mat away. Yoga can help you learn to live in a more peaceful and balanced way. I have been practicing yoga for a number of years and it has had a wonderful impact on my mind and body.
Yoga Benefits Your Mind
It is a Great Stress Reliever – Yoga is one of the greatest stress relievers around. Its focus on deep breathing allows you to bring your body to a state of peace and harmony. Deep breathing is one of the best ways to calm the ‘fight or flight’ response which many of us feel when we are under stress. Whenever I feel anxious, I immediately begin to use my yoga breathing and it helps me calm down. And the best thing is that you can do it anywhere.
It Helps You Deal With Challenges – Many yoga postures can be very challenging. If you are trying to stay balanced with one hand and one foot on the floor and the rest of your body in the air, you need to learn how to deal with this challenge without falling. You learn how to breathe through the difficulties and stay balanced. You can take this ability into the rest of your life to help you deal with other difficult situations.
It Helps You Focus – During every yoga practice you maintain a sense of focus. You can either focus on a specific point in each pose or you can focus internally by closing your eyes. This can help you more effectively focus your attention on the things you need to do in your life.
Yoga Benefits Your Body
It Develops Strength – Yoga benefits all of your muscles not just some of them. In most of the poses, you are working several muscle groups at the same time. In some types of yoga you hold poses for extended periods of time. You need to really contract your muscles to be able to hold the poses and this contributes to greater muscle strength.
It Develops Flexibility – A key benefit of yoga is its ability to help stretch and lengthen muscles. This is critical in order to be able to prevent injuries that often occur when muscles are too tight.
It Helps Balance Your Body – Whether you are doing beginner yoga or advanced yoga, all poses are done on both sides of the body. This helps you create a sense of alignment and balance in your body. Many injuries occur because one side of the body is weaker than the other. Yoga helps correct imbalances and strengthens weaker areas of your body so your muscles are working properly.
It is Natural Mind Body Medicine – Yoga helps improve your digestion, your circulation, and your immune system. It tones your internal organs and it helps release toxins from your body. You can even do specific poses to treat certain common problems like constipation, insomnia, and back pain.
It Promotes Better Breathing – Most people do not breathe fully. Their breath is constricted in their chest. Yoga benefits your respiratory system by freeing tight muscles around your chest and teaching you how to take full, deep breaths. This more effectively oxygenates your cells and it can also give you a greater sense of energy.
Yoga Benefits Your Spirit
It Connects You to Your Inner Sprit – Every yoga practice ends with a meditation or relaxation session. The purpose of doing the poses is to free your body from any tension or stress that you might be feeling so you can more successfully get centered within. There is a part of you that is greater than your mind or your body. It is the spirit within. Most yoga classes end with the phrase Namaste which is translated as ‘the Spirit/God in me salutes the Spirit/God in you.’ Connecting with your spirit on a regular basis can bring you a sense of peace, harmony, and joy that you can take with you into every aspect of your life.
Now you can see that the benefit of yoga can impact every aspect of your life. But don’t take my word for it. Try it for yourself so you can experience how yoga benefits your life too.
