What is Spiritual Health?
How the Right Spiritual Thoughts
Can Put You on the Path to Wholeness
What is spiritual health? This is a question that many of my students ask me. They also want to know how they will recognize it when they have achieved it and how they can keep it once they have it. I love hearing these questions because they are all signs of spiritual awakening in my students. It demonstrates that spiritual thoughts are becoming more and more a part of theirlives.
The problem is that there isn’t one simple answer to this question. Becoming spiritually healthy is more of a way of approaching life rather than a static state that you arrive at once and for all.
There are different aspects of life that you can use as a gauge to determine your level of spiritual wellness and enlightenment. Here are some areas for you to consider.
What is Spiritual Health in Connection with Religion?
Some people believe they practice the one true religion and that everyone else is on the wrong path. Others don’t believe in following one specific religion but they do consider themselves to be spiritual.
There is no spirituality vs. religion and there is no one true religion. A sign of your spiritual enlightenment is to recognize that there are many paths to God. Some people practice a particular faith, and some meditate, pray or commune with nature.
It isn’t important which path a person follows. What is important is that you realize that each person is entitled to follow his or her own path as long as it doesn’t take away the free will of others.
What is Spiritual Health in Connection with Disease?
Many people believe that disease is something that just happens to them. However, it is well known that there is a mind body connection and that what you think on a regular basis will eventually impact your health. If your thoughts have habitually been negative, then you may end up with some type of disease.
If you find yourself with some health challenge, don’t beat yourself up. Just recognize that spirituality and health are connected. See your health challenge as an invitation to get clearer about negative things you have been believing. Start to release some of these negative ideas and replace them with spiritual thoughts. Thought control is a possibility for you and you want to start doing it regularly.
What is Spiritual Health in Connection with Relationships?
Most people believe that they have absolutely no control over the types of people who are in their lives. I hate to be the bearer of bad news but the fact is that we all have a very strong influence over the types of people who are part of our world. There is a Law of Correspondence that says you will attract into your life what you really believe about yourself.
What kind of people do you currently have in your life? Are they positive or negative? It may be a hard thing to accept, but the people in your world are a reflection of what you believe about yourself deep, down inside of you. If you find that you are surrounded with people who are hurtful to you or who criticize you, it is an indication that you need to love yourself.
A sign of spiritual maturity is to refuse to play the victim. Instead, take responsibility for treating yourself better and then the people in your world will begin to treat you better also.
What is Spiritual Health in Connection with Adversity?
Life happens. Things go wrong. Challenges occur. Many people believe that they are victim to circumstances. Nothing could be further from the truth.
One of the surest signs of spiritual awakening is to recognize that no matter what happens in your life, Spirit is right there in the middle of it. You put on your spiritual armor of Truth -- God is all there is, God is only good, and God is right there in the middle of the challenge. Then you do whatever you need to do, but you recognize your spiritual oneness with God. You are not alone. You have the support of the Universe on your side to help make things right.
These are some areas to help you measure your own progress to the question, “What is spiritual health?” If you are doing well, that is great. If you find that you fall short in some areas, then begin to take action to do better. Just remember to be kind to yourself.
Life is a journey. Spiritual wellness is a process. Often you move forward and then something happens and you fall a few steps backward. Just continue to pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and keep moving forward.
Now that, my friend, is a true sign of spiritual health.
