Does just the thought of goal planning overwhelm you? These simple tips on setting goals will have you writing out your goal list and acting on it before you even think about it.
As a spiritual being, you are meant to have goals to work towards. Spirit did not create you so you could stay stuck where you are. You know all of those ideas that come up in your mind over and over again -- the ones where you say, “Wouldn’t it be great if I could . . .?” Many of these ideas are a glimpse of what is possible for you if you only put your mind to it.
When you apply the following tips on setting goals, it will make the entire process of reaching for your dreams easy to put into practice. Why? Because it gives you a road map of what to do.
Decide What You Don’t Want – Most people aren’t sure about what goals they want to set. But they are very clear about the things that they don’t like. So one of the easiest tips on setting goals that can help you get come clarity, is to pick a specific situation and write a list of everything you don’t like about it.
Decide What You Do Want – Now that you know what you don’t want, write a list of what you do want. For every item that you put down on your “Don’t Want List” write down what you want instead.
For example, if you don’t want to struggle to pay your bills, write down that you want to have more than enough money to pay all of your bills easily and on time.
One of the most important tips on setting goals is this -- goals must be written in the positive, not the negative.
When you have finished turning the negatives into positives, you will then have clarity about your goal. See how easy it really is when you use the right tips on goal setting?
Also, shred the list of what you don’t want. There’s no need to think about that any more.
Put Your Goal List on Paper – Another one of my top tips on setting goals is the need for writing your goals down. Put your pen to the paper (or your keys on the keyboard) and write down a detailed description of what your completed goal looks like. This forces you to really consider every aspect of your goal. The Law of Success, which can accomplish seeming ‘miracles,’ does not work well with fuzzy thinking.
When you are planning your goal, be sure to make it a stretch, not a huge leap. Set your goal far enough away so you can be excited about it and motivated to achieve it. You don’t want to set it so far away that you are constantly filled with doubts.
Refer to it Often - Once you have written out your goal, refer to it on a regular basis. The more frequently you focus on it, the more energized you will become. It will also help you to build your belief that your goal can really happen.
Do a Guided Imagery Meditation – Meditate on your goal at least once each day. See yourself having already accomplished your goal. Feel the wonderful feelings of achieving what you have set out to accomplish.
After you do that, sit still, stay quiet and listen. Listen to that still small voice within. This is your Divine Wisdom telling you what you should do next.
This is one of the most powerful tips on setting goals that I can offer you. It is the one that I personally use most frequently and I have experienced amazing results from it.
Share Your Goal Carefully – It is really exciting to share your goal with other people. But another one of my important tips on setting goals is to share your goal with supporters, not negators.
I’m sure you know some people who, if you share your new goal with them, will tell you every reason why you can’t achieve your goal. They will burst your bubble and may cause you to give up before you even begin. Stay away from them!
Share your goal with other goal setters. These are people who know the power of setting and achieving goals and they can be your biggest supporters. When you feel like giving up, they can tell you, “I believe in you. I know you can do it.” These are the people you want to hang around with!
Be Willing to Change Direction – When you first begin your goal setting journey, you will have a general direction of where you are going. However, it is likely that you will need to make adjustments or change course entirely. Be willing to do that. Otherwise, if you are so fixated on sticking with your original plan and you aren’t willing to be flexible, you might not achieve what you want.
Realize that the way you think things need to happen in order to achieve your goal usually won’t happen. Life is very interesting. There is a good chance that you will realize your goal in a way that you could never have imagined.
Be Willing To Stick it Out – Even though these tips on setting goals will help you on your journey, you might have some rough spots along the way. Be willing to go the distance. If it takes longer than you thought to achieve what you want, so what? Just keep on moving along – learning, adjusting, and growing along the way. Eventually, if you keep your eye on your target, you will probably get there.
You now know these handy tips on setting goals. They can make the way easier, but they still need you. You need to do the work. You need to take regular action toward your goal. You need to persevere in the face of obstacles. But when you are willing to do it (and I know you are), you can be amazed at what you can achieve in your life.
