What’s The Spirit, Mind, Body Connection?


Stress and spirituality are connected in more ways than you might imagine. There is definitely a spirit, mind, body connection in your life. How you think impacts your body and your thoughts are impacted by how connected you feel to your spirit. You are not just a person with a body. You are a spiritual being with a mind that affects every aspect of you from the top of your head to the tips of your toes.

There is significant research to support the Spirit, Mind, Body Medicine Connection.

  • A study published in Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine demonstrated that individuals who participated in guided imagery meditation techniques showed a significant drop in the stress hormone cortisol.

  • A recent study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine demonstrated that the regular practice of transcendental medicine was highly effective in preventing the risk factors for obesity, high blood pressure, and diabetes.

  • A study conducted by the National Institute for Health Care Research indicated that Canadian college students who were involved with their campus ministries were able to handle stress more effectively during challenging times than other students. They also visited their doctors less often.


Stress and Spirituality – How Do They Relate to Each Other?

When you are going through difficult times, it is easy to feel stressed and overwhelmed. You often have a feeling that you have to handle your challenges by yourself. This usually leads to an even greater feeling of stress and anxiety. During these times it is so easy to forget that there is a spiritual aspect to you. It is easy to forget that you aren’t alone, that there is a Loving Presence that is available to help you get through these times.

We don’t remember the promise from Spirit which is summed up in this quote from the Bible –


Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. Matthew 11:28-29


We forget to turn to Spirit when we are feeling burdened and so we feel more overwhelmed. When we turn our burdens over to Spirit, we get rid of stress and feel a deep sense of peace.




Stress and Spirituality – One Can Heal the Other

You can learn to reduce your stress and spirituality can become a more significant part of your life by implementing these ideas.

Meditation – Practice easy meditation techniques such as focusing on your breath. As you inhale, feel Spirit’s love in every part of your body. As you exhale, feel a deep sense of peace. A Meditation Kit might help you relax and get centered.

Pray – Say prayers for healing regarding every challenge in your life. Any time you feel yourself getting stressed about something, say a prayer about it and know that Spirit is making all things turn out well for you.

Spiritual Oneness – Remind yourself of your spiritual oneness with God by saying healing affirmations such as,”I am one with Spirit. All is well.” Any time you feel the stress starting to build, repeat this positive affirmation to yourself.

Read Spiritual Sayings – Find quotes or passages that remind you that Spirit is your strength and your power and is always available to help you in life. Read these passages whenever you feel the stress starting to build in your mind and body.

Sense of Purpose – Get involved in those issues that are important to you. Make a positive a difference in the world. When you feel that your life has meaning, it makes it easier for you to let go of the little things that might normally stress you out.


You can see how stress and spirituality are closely meshed together. When you feel an overwhelming sense of stress, it is usually because you are not tapping into your spiritual side on a regular basis. When you are feeling a sense of peace and well being in your life, it is most likely because you realize that wherever you go and whatever do, Spirit is right there with you.
