A Self Fulfilling Prophecy
Positive or Negative Self Talk
Which Will You Choose?
A self fulfilling prophecy. Is this some New Age mumbo jumbo or could it really have an impact on your life? The answer is yes – it already does have a major impact on what is going on in your life.
So what is a self fulfilling prophecy? I think it can be summed up in the profound words of Henry Ford –
“If you think you can or you think you can’t, you’re right.”
What this phrase is really saying is that if you put self imposed limitations on your life, then that is what you will experience. On the other hand, if you think that you have unlimited possibilities, then that is also what you will experience.
Life is neutral. It doesn’t really care what you think, but it will support you in experiencing the results of what you think.
There is a Law of Cause and Effect (also known as the Law of Karma). The law states that whatever you think deep down inside will be cause to your effects or results. You will reap (in this lifetime) the seeds that you have sown with your thoughts.
If you engage in a lot of negative thinking and negative self talk, then your self fulfilling prophecy will be that you will have many difficult situations in your life. This will probably cause you to believe even more strongly that life is hard, and that only some people can be happy and, unfortunately, you just aren’t one of them. And so you continue to perpetuate the negative cycle.
I guess what I am really trying to get you to understand is that your thinking will definitely become the self fulfilling prophecy in your life. You notice that this phrase doesn’t say other fulfilling prophecy. It doesn’t matter what other people think you can achieve. It only matters what you think is possible for you.
Changing Your Self Fulfilling Prophecy
So, if you are stuck in a cycle of negative self talk and thinking, how do you go about breaking out of it? You start to challenge your thoughts and words.
- Pay attention to your self talk – The first step in allowing your self to receive more good is to begin to get clear about what you believe about life. Listen to your internal conversation and also listen to what you say to others.
- Transform your self talk – If you find that you are engaging in negative self talk, then change it to positive self talk. Let’s say that you are going on a job interview and you tell yourself, “I’ll never get this job. There are probably going to be a ton of people who will be interviewing for it and they will be more qualified than me.”
This type of thinking is going to kill your chances of getting the job. You need to transform this thinking to positive self talk, “I am qualified to be working in this job. I am a dedicated worker and this organization would be lucky to have me.” This will help you improve your confidence in your ability to get the job.
- Say a daily positive affirmation – Begin to change the way you think about yourself by saying a positive affirmation throughout your day. “I am now joyously employed in my right and perfect job. I am a blessing to my organization and it is a blessing to me.”
- Use healing affirmations – Say healing affirmations such as, “I deserve to be successful,” or “I am worthy to receive the best that life has to offer.” You want to start believing that it is a good thing for you to enjoy life’s blessings.
Whatever your self fulfilling prophecy has been up till now does not matter. You can always change it. Remember, the Law of Cause and Effect is always waiting to make sure that whatever you think about yourself, comes true. Give it good, positive directions and then you will be delighted with the results.
