A New Thought Church
It's A Powerful Center for
Your Spiritual Healing
Many people think that a New Thought church is part of a New Age religion but that isn’t the case. New Age includes various practices such as crystals, tarot cards, astrology, and psychic readings. These activities are not part of a traditional church.
Why am I such an expert on this matter? I am a Licensed New Thought Minister. I have been attending these types of churches for twenty years.
What is New Thought?
Before I share with you what it is like to go to a New Thought Church, I want you to understand what New Thought is. It is a new way of looking at religion or spirituality. It is based on the metaphysical studies of Phineas Parkhurst Quimby, who is considered to be the founder of the New Thought movement. He was one of the first pioneers of the mind body connection.
Quimby believed that all disease was mental. According to him, it existed as the result of a false belief or error of thinking. He often said that, “The truth is the cure.” If someone substituted truth for a false belief, then healing would occur. Quimby’s healing ministry resulted in a significant number of physical cures.
This is the foundation of every New Thought Church – the idea that mental healing changes the material world –- it doesn't just change the physical body, it also changes negative conditions.
The Three Main Types of Churches
There are 3 main churches which fall under the umbrella of New Thought –-Divine ScienceCenters for Spiritual Living Unity School of Christianity
Divine Science – was founded by Malinda Cramer and Nona Brooks. The Divine Science Textbook is the source of its teachings. It is the smallest of the three churches in terms of the actual number of churches and membership.Centers for Spiritual Living – was founded by Ernest Holmes and its main teaching tool is the textbook, The Science of Mind: The Definitive Edition. (This is one of the most important books that I own. I use it so often that the binding is broken and tattered, but I won’t give up my copy!)
Even though the Centers for Spiritual Living is referred to as a church, it originally began as a teaching institute. Classes, which teach metaphysical principles, are the foundation of this type of New Thought Church. Students usually take many classes and they are often trained to be Licensed Practitioners of Healing. There are centers and study groups located around the world.
Unity School of Christianity – was founded by Charles and Myrtle Fillmore. It is often referred to as practical Christianity. This type of New Thought Church uses more Christian terminology and references than the others. Lessons in Truth by Emilie Cady, is the main textbook that is used in Unity. (This book has been very important to my spiritual awakening. I refer to it on a regular basis.)
Unity does not place such a high focus on teaching classes. It does place a very strong emphasis on healing prayer. Silent Unity, its prayer ministry, offers prayer support to people throughout the world. It has the largest membership of the three types of churches.
What to Expect When You Attend a New Thought Church
Regardless of whether you go to a Divine Science or Unity Church or to one of the Centers for Spiritual Living, you are likely to have a similar experience at a Sunday service. Welcome – There is usually at least one person who will personally welcome you when you walk in the door. You might even be offered a hug. (I am usually one of the greeters at our church and I give out hugs very freely.)
Time for Reflection – Most churches offer a period of quiet time or reflection before the actual service begins. Some centers also do an opening prayer or meditation before the service. Music – Music is a very important part of a New Thought Church service. Very often the songs support the actual lesson for the day. Most of the songs are affirmative and offer positive messages. General Welcome and Announcements – Like most other types of churches, there are announcements about the various activities that are in progress or those that are coming. People are invited to fully participate in some or all of the activities. Meditation – Almost every New Thought Church offers a time of meditation during the service. It can be a guided meditation, words from spiritual masters or a prayer. The purpose is to allow the participants to become connected with their inner Spirit. This is considered to be a very important part of your spiritual journey -- to learn to rely on the Divine Wisdom that exists within you. Sunday Lesson – This is where a New Thought Church differs from most other religions -- there are no rules!
What you probably will hear is . . .
- God is unconditional love
- God is the only thing that exists
- You are a part of God
- You have unlimited power to co-create whatever your want
- Your thoughts and beliefs will eventually become your experiences.
You might also be given some ways to apply these ideas to your own life.Tithe – All churches are self supported so there is usually a tithing process or an offering. However, this is considered to be a spiritual practice - as you give with a loving and grateful heart, even more abundance will flow back to you.
Prayer Support – Some centers offer prayer support after the service. You can meet with a trained practitioner who will do a prayer for you regarding whatever condition you choose. Fellowship and Books - Most churches have a fellowship after the service so you can connect with other people in the spiritual community. Many also offer wonderful metaphysical books for sale.
It’s A Great Place to Learn and Grow
As you move forward on your personal journey of spiritual awakening, attending a New Thought Church is a great place for you to receive greater spiritual understanding and support. It also a wonderful place to be with like-minded people.
Who knows? After you attend one – you might discover that you have found your new spiritual home.
