A Key to Positive Self Talk for Your Mind
Many people ask me if saying a daily affirmation on a consistent basis can make a positive difference in their lives. The answer is definitely YES.
What is a Daily Affirmation?
It is a positive idea of something you would like to believe about yourself which you don’t believe right now. For instance, if you would like to believe that you are confident about your ability to handle yourself in any situation but you don’t believe that now, a good daily affirmation could be –
“I am now confident that I can successfully handle all situations in my life.”
We all talk to ourselves every day. Many of the things we tell ourselves are negative and limiting. They prevent us from doing things and having things that we really want in our lives.
A positive affirmation starts to get you to change your ideas about yourself and what is possible in your life. It is basically a form of positive self talk that you are using on a regular basis. You are training your brain to think differently about yourself.
It is positive - An affirmation must be positive. If you are shy you wouldn’t say that you are no longer shy. You want to affirm what do want, not what you don’t want. Using healing affirmations such as, “I am very comfortable when I am with people,” or “I can easily talk to new people,” are examples of affirmations that you could use.
It is used in the present tense – Words of affirmation must be said in the present tense. You are affirming in the present tense what you would like to believe about yourself in the future. Your subconscious takes what you say about yourself literally. If you continually tell yourself “I am intelligent and I learn new things easily,” eventually you will find that you are able to understand new ideas easily and without struggle.
It should be done on a regular basis – You are trying to change your unconscious thoughts about yourself with positive self talk. This is not going to happen overnight. You must say your positive affirmation on a regular basis for it to have any impact. It is actually a great idea to choose a daily affirmation and say it to yourself many times throughout the day so it begins to seep down into your subconscious thinking.
Ways to find ideas for words of affirmation – You can use words of spiritual encouragement or inspirational sayings to help you develop a daily affirmation. For instance, the idea that God loves all of its creations can be turned into “I am lovingly supported by Spirit in every aspect of my life.” (This is one of my personal favorites.) The inspirational idea that there is no limit to what the mind can conceive and achieve can be turned into “I am able to easily and successfully achieve anything I set my mind to.” This is another one of my favorites.)
Variety is fine, but take it slowly – You can use a different one for various aspects of your life. You can say one for health, one for your career, one for your relationships, one for your finances, or any other things that are important to you. Just be careful to take it slowly and not overwhelm yourself. Your thoughts about yourself are the result of many years of thinking a certain way. It is going to time to change your thinking. Choose a few that you want to work with and stick with them until you feel they are working for you. Then you can let those go and work with others.
It is an Ongoing Process
Saying a daily affirmation is not something that you do for a week, a month, or a few months -- at least not if you are serious about changing your life for the better. It is a tool that you should continue to use regularly.
